Story Of The Pink Ribbon

Most of us are aware about the pink ribbon which is a symbol of the breast cancer awareness program. In fact every year the month of October which is considered as the breast cancer awareness month people all around the world sport the pink colour with either the ribbon or wearing pink colour clothes! But what exactly is the story behind the pink colour or why did people actually start wearing it is still an unknown fact for most people. Well the history of the pink ribbon actually dates back to the 19th century. At this time ladies used to wear yellow ribbons around their clothes as a symbol of remembering their loved ones. These loved ones were the ones working in the military at that time. In fact during the Iran hostage crisis most Americans had tied yellow ribbons as a symbol of solidarity with those who were being held as hostages. It was after this that people started wearing ribbons as a symbol of affection and care or to create awareness about a particular issue. In fact a group called the Visual AIDS were the ones who launched the red ribbons at the 45th Toni awards to create awareness about AIDS. Actor Jeremy Irons was the first one to sport this ribbon.

Then came the beginning of the symbol of breast cancer. A survivor of this grave ailment, Charles Hayley was the first one to introduce a peach coloured cancer awareness ribbon. A note was attached to the ribbon that stated that the NCI’s annual budget is around 1.8 billion US dollars however not more than 5 percent is spent for treating or taking preventive measures for cancer. She was also approached by various commercial magazines who wanted to adopt her concept one of them being the Self Magazine. However she refused many such proposals.  Later, the editor in chief of the magazine and Evelyn Lauder who herself was a breast cancer survivor together founded the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and pink ribbons were then introduced as a symbol of awareness for breast cancer. While the first ever Breast cancer month was celebrated in October 1986, the pink ribbons became an official symbol of breast cancer in the year 1981. There after year and year and even today we find almost everyone from different parts of this world sporting the ribbon as a symbol of awareness.
